The Importance of School-Based Programs

School-based education is one of the most powerful tools in shaping attitudes and behaviors related to gender equality and violence prevention. By integrating anti-violence education into the school curricula, we can provide children with the knowledge and skills to recognize and prevent GBV.

Research has shown that when students are taught about the dangers of gender-based violence and how to foster respect and equality, they are less likely to engage in harmful behaviors in the future. A school environment that promotes healthy relationships, respect for diversity, and zero tolerance for violence helps students understand their rights and the importance of treating others with dignity.

Curriculum and Awareness Programs

A key aspect of education’s role in preventing GBV is the development of inclusive and comprehensive curricula that address issues such as consent, healthy relationships, and gender stereotypes. Some core areas that should be addressed in school curricula include:

• Understanding Consent: Students should learn what consent means, why it’s important, and how to respect the boundaries of others.
• Recognizing Healthy Relationships: Teaching students about the characteristics of healthy relationships—such as mutual respect, communication, and trust—empowers them to build positive connections.
• Challenging Gender Stereotypes: Educating students about the harmful effects of rigid gender roles helps break down stereotypes and promotes equality between the sexes.
• Promoting Respect for Diversity: Schools should emphasize the importance of respecting people from diverse backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities.

Engaging Parents and Communities

Prevention of gender-based violence is not only the responsibility of schools, but also of the community at large. Parents, caregivers, and community leaders all play a role in teaching children about respect, equality, and healthy relationships.

Schools should encourage parental involvement in educational programs that address GBV prevention. Parents can reinforce the messages learned in school by modeling respectful behaviors at home. Community leaders, such as religious figures and local organizations, can also help by promoting anti-violence messages and offering resources for families who need support.
