Key information about Botox, or botulinum toxin
Written by: Mounira Saddi

Botulinum toxin (often referred to as Botox, although it is a specific brand) is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It works by temporarily blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter essential for muscle contraction. This results in relaxation of the targeted muscles.
Botox is a safe and highly effective method in aesthetics, widely recognized for its ability to reduce expression lines and improve facial symmetry.
Botulinum Toxin Uses:
Medical:
- Treatment of muscle spasms (dystonias)
- Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
- Chronic migraines
- Jaw or bruxism disorders
- Overactive bladder
Aesthetics:
- Reduction of expression lines, such as forehead wrinkles, crow's feet, and frown lines
- Improvement of facial symmetry
Alternatives to Botulinum Toxin:
Medical:
- Muscle relaxants (oral): For example, Baclofen, Tizanidine. Used for specific muscle conditions.
- Physical therapies: Physiotherapy, massages, or targeted exercises for muscle spasms.
- Surgery: Some dystonias or disorders may require surgery.
Aesthetic:
- Hyaluronic acid (fillers): Fills in wrinkles by increasing volume.
- Anti-wrinkle creams: Based on retinol or collagen, they can improve skin texture, although the effect is limited.
- Non-invasive techniques: Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), Radiofrequency to tighten the skin, Fractional laser.
- Facial exercises: Techniques to tone the muscles of the face.
- Chemical peels or microdermabrasion: To reduce superficial wrinkles and even out skin texture.
The choice of alternative depends on the specific objectives and conditions. For optimal results, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional or dermatologist.
